On this unique tour we'll visit two unique landmarks that were both built by the hands of two visionary men.
In 1959, Michael Rubel started building a getaway house out of cement and champagne bottles to escape his mother's extravagant parties. Eventually several friends and community members got involved, donating virtually every piece of junk you could imagine. Completed in 1986, the Castle was the first major recycling project in the U.S. As we walk the Castle grounds with our docent, you will see the partially concrete walls made out of scrap steel, rocks, bedsprings, coat hangers, bottles and everything in between - it's much like Watts Towers. Various wooden rooms display its timeless nature, from a gramophone, hand-cranked printing presses, sepia-stained photographs, paintings, delightful 'old-world' furnishings, vintage clothing, and a round table room whose seats are actually comprised of tree trunks fastened with padded leather seats.
Later, enjoy an included delicious barbecue-style lunch at a locals' favorite restaurant in the quaint Glendora Village.
This afternoon we'll step into Sam Maloof's 'Arts & Crafts'-style home in Alta Loma. The legacy of Maloof - known as one of the finest woodworkers and master craftsmen of our time - will come alive as you stroll through his home and visit his workshop which is still an active woodworking business. He created a home of unique beauty and artistic superiority that is the setting for his hand-crafted furniture as well as the extensive collection of art he and his wife amassed.
Note: The castle has uneven walking surfaces and lacks handrails. This tour is not recommended for anyone who uses a cane or walker or has limited eyesight. Walking shoes are necessary to fully enjoy this unique opportunity.
